New York, NY (AHN) - A survey by the Time/Rockefeller Foundation released Thursday said Generation Y are pessimistic about the future of the U.S.

Almost 50 percent of young Americans between the ages 18 to 29 told pollsters it was better to live in the 1990s than the present and they foresee the economic situation further deteriorating. Another 29 percent said the best days for America had already passed, while 58 percent admitted they had to borrow money in 2007 to cope with rising prices.

About 52 percent said they no longer had faith in the American dream, while 85 percent believed the U.S. is on the wrong track.

Laura Maisel, a 26-year old media account manager, voiced a common sentiment among the Generation Y members. "It's especially tough in New York because everything is expensive here... My future is not as secure as I thought it was right out of school," she told the New York Daily News.

A large number of the survey respondents said they look to the government to find solutions to the economic woes that has slowed down the country. About 82 percent said the government must invest to create more jobs, while 70 percent expected more government programs to assist Americans struggling with their mortgages, credit card debts and other financial problems they deal with on a daily basis.
