Nassau, Bahamas (AHN) - Canadian telecom equipment maker Nortel was awarded a contract by the Bahamas Telecommunications Co. for the island nation's expansion of its wireless network services.

Nortel will upgrade Bahamas' existing TDMA network to GSM, which will expand coverage, improve services and reception, and raise speed by three times over its current network.

The project is expected to be completed by end of 2008. Project cost was not disclosed.

The Canadian telecom will also use its Global Evolution EDGE technology, which will provide BTC customers with higher bandwidth as well as accommodate higher voice traffic.

The upgraded software will allow BTC's network to support speeds of up to 1Mb/s and provide a cost effective transition to the next generation LTE technology.
