Nike, through its spokesman Dean Stoyer, is giving its swimmers a break in wearing Speedo's own suit, which has caused quite a stir following its reported influence in winning athletes.
"After conferring with Nike swimmers following recent training and competitions, Nike has decided to extend its limited exception allowing our athletes to compete in non-Nike Swift Swim technology," Stoyer told CNBC.
"Nike is a company that exists to serve athletes - hence this limited exception to allow Nike swimmers to compete without distractions was the correct thing to do given the very unique circumstances," he added.
All but four of the 52 record-winning athletes at the U.S. Olympic Trials have worn Speedo's suit.
Nike's concession follows its earlier decision to allow athletes to wear the competitor's brand in the Olympic Trials.
The Olympics swimming competitions kick off on Aug. 9, a day after the opening ceremonies are scheduled.
