Kansas City, MO (AHN) - Kansas University (KU) rewarded Bill Self with a 10-year deal estimated to reach $30 million on Wednesday, after steering the Jayhawks to its first NCAA championship in 20 years.

Self, 45, who turned down a big offer from Oklahoma State, signed a new contract with KU, keeping him as the school's basketball coach until March 2018. He is expected to earn $3 million annually for the next 10 years.

The new contract which is retroactive to April 1, 2008 will only be reached if Self remains with KU till 2018.

Under Self's new contract, his annual salary of $229,900 will be maintained, but an additional package including $2,270,100 for "professional services" and other incentives has been added.

KU, in a school release, said professional services could include "educational, public relations and promotional duties as assigned by the director of athletics."

"Such duties could include the production of any radio or television shows, Internet features or Self's occasional endorsement of products affiliated with and approved by Kansas Athletics or its marketing partner(s)."

In 2006, Self signed a five-year extension paying him $1.6 million annually.

After steering the Jayhawks to the Elite Eight and past tournament number 1 seed North Carolina in the semis en route to the 2008 NCAA crown, Self has solidified his role in the school's basketball program.

Self has amassed a record of 142-32, including a 64-16 log in Big 12 games since replacing then coach Roy Williams five years ago.

Self, a four-time finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, has captured the last four Big-12 regular season titles and the last three conference tournament championships.
