August 15, 2008 12:02 p.m. EST Matt Aug - AHN Sports Editor Beijing, China (AHN) - Nastia Liukin did not have to play second-fiddle to Shawn Johnson Friday, toppling her U.S. teammate for all-around gold in women's gymnastics. Liukin defeated the favored Johnson by an ever so-slight margin, sixth-tenths of a point, with 63.325 points, to set off a celebration in her family. Yang Yilin of China took the bronze with her third-place finish. It had to be a particularly satisfying achievement for Liukin, who was defeated by Johnson recently at both the U.S. championships and Olympic trials. Her father, Valeri, was also joyous as he "settled" for silver in men's gymnastics while competing for Russia two decades ago. Liukin is the second straight American to win the all-around crown, following Carly Patterson at the top of the podium. Johnson should still be credited for a fine performance, but this Olympics was Liukin's time to shine, which she clearly did.
