America Ferrera, "Ugly Betty" Take Home Top Honors At The 2008 ALMA Awards

Pasadena, CA (CNS) - "Ugly Betty" takes home a multitude of awards at the 2008 ALMA Awards on Sunday, with star America Ferrera taking home the top honor as the Entertainer of the Year.

Ferrera, 24, and the rest of the cast of the ABC comedy-drama series won the year's performance by a Latino ensemble in a television series at the awards show recognizing the achievements by Hispanic artists. Linda Mendoza also took home the award for directing the show.

Columbian singer/songwriter Shakira was presented with the Humanitarian award for her offstage efforts in early childhood education programs, while vocalist and entertainer Linda Ronstadt took home the Trailblazer award for her contributions to the music industry.

The American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Awards was created by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) in 1995 to honor Hispanic performers who promote positive images of the Latin community in entertainment. The show will be broadcasted on September 12 on ABC.
