UNESCO Names Scottish City Glasgow As City Of Music

Glasgow, Scotland (CNS) - Glasgow has been named a UNESCO City of Music on Wednesday. The UN cultural agency has recognized Scotland's largest city for its musical past and its current role in music.

It joins Bologna, Italy and Seville, Spain as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's Creative Cities Network. Scottish capital Edinburgh is already a UNESCO recognized city in the field of Literature.

The agency's director-general, Koichiro Matsuura, hailed the honor as "the beginning of what I am sure will be a very rich and fruitful partnership."

There are 127 music events being staged every week in the city, with a wide range of music variety from contemporary to Celtic. Also, Glasgow is home to several well-known music artists such as rock bands Franz Ferdinand and the Fratellis.

As part of their new responsibility, Glasgow will now have to report to the UN cultural agency once per two years on its efforts and achievements in the musical aspect.
