August 28, 2008 4:44 a.m. EST Matt Aug - AHN Sports Editor San Diego, CA (AHN) - San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman announced Wednesday he will put off surgery to play this season despite having two torn ligaments in his left knee. Merriman, a three-time Pro Bowler and a cornerstone of the Charger defense, confirmed to the media Saturday that both his posterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments are damaged. He acknowledged doctors have told him he needs full surgery that could put him on the shelf for the season, but he wants to play. Merriman, 24, has 39? sacks over the past three seasons, tops among the league during that span. "It could be career-threatening if I did [play]," Merriman admitted to ESPN over the weekend.
