August 29, 2008 4:03 p.m. EST Jupiter Kalambakal - AHN News Writer Ottawa, Ontario (AHN) - Nortel and LG Electronics have completed the world's first mobile LTE (long term evolution) live air handover. The Canadian and South Korean firms presented streaming HD video on an early LTE mobile unit from LG Electronics while driving at speeds of 100 kilometers (60 miles) per hour and moving between coverage sites, according to a Nortel statement. Nortel's LTE provides "hyperconnectivity," a reliable mobile coverage for 2G and 3G network users with greater bandwidth, higher capacity and lower latency. It is capable of allowing operators to create a 4G wireless broadband network covering millions of mobile subscribers. "With the increasing popularity of bandwidth-intensive applications over mobile devices like laptops and smartphones, wireless operators need to prepare to offer a complete personal broadband experience," said Richard Lowe, president of Nortel carrier networks. Nortel's LTE is expected to be commercially available in 2009.
