August 29, 2008 4:53 p.m. EST Jupiter Kalambakal - AHN News Writer Houston, TX (AHN) - The Port of Houston Authority has approved projects worth $35 million, which includes the acquisition of container handling equipment for an ongoing project and a study for another future facility in the Houston Ship Channel. The authority will buy 3 quay cranes to be installed at Berth 3 of the Bayport Container Terminal, whose development is in progress. The equipment is estimated to cost of about $34 million. Currently, the terminal uses six cranes. Upon completion, Bayport will have an annual handling capacity of 2.3 million 20-foot-equivalent units. The port also tapped the services of Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam Inc. to evaluate the need for a future container terminal. The Port of Houston holds 70 percent of the container market share in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
