September 5, 2008 5:31 p.m. EST Matthew Borghese - AHN Editor New York, NY (AHN) - Sony has issued a recall for 438,000 VAIO laptops after a wiring problem caused overheating and injuries. Sony say 19 models of its TZ Series laptop are involved in the recall. The problem comes year after Sony was forced to recall 9.6 million batteries, used in laptops made by other companies including Apple, Dell and Toshiba. "Sony takes pride in the quality of its products. Recently, we became aware of a potential issue," VAIO division Senior Vice President Mike Abary wrote in a recall notice. "Sony has initiated a voluntary program to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a repair to ensure these units meet our high quality standards." "At no charge, Sony will provide an inspection and, if necessary, on-site repair at your home or office. Alternatively, you can ship your notebook to our service center," Abary added. According to Sony, the problem effects all models sold between July 2007 and August 2008. Specifically, "irregularly placed wires near the hinge, or a dislodged screw inside the hinge, may create a short circuit, causing localized overheating."
