September 7, 2008 11:22 a.m. EST Jupiter Kalambakal - AHN News Writer Ottawa, Ontario (AHN) - The Canadian Government is set to spend millions of dollars to improve and modernize military facilities on both east and west coasts. Canadian Press reported that Defense Minister Peter MacKay will allocate an estimated $76 million for surveillance and maintenance facilities. It said that about $47 million will be used in building a repair facility in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for the navy's wider and broader Victoria-class submarines. The project, said to be the costliest. To conduct many of the search-and-rescue missions off the coasts, the report added that a $20 million surveillance project will be employed to help crews carry out patrols over Canadian territory. In addition, $9.6 million will be used to replace old equipments in laboratories at Halifax and Esquimalt, British Columbia.
