September 22, 2008 9:14 p.m. EST AHN Staff New York, NY (AHN) - Thousands of Jewish activists and Israel supporters greeted the United Nations General Assembly opening on Monday with an anti-Iran demonstration outside the UN building here. The demonstrators from various Jewish groups arrived at the building on buses and waved Israel and U.S. flags as well as placards that read "Stop Iran Now" and "No Nuclear Iran." John Ruskay of the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York told VOAnews.com the rally was intended for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who attending the UN session. Activists from the Code Pink: Women for Peace joined the rally in the sideline calling for the U.S. and UN members "to negotiate with Iran" and to "stop the next war now." The U.S. has accused Iran of building nuclear weapons but Ahmadinejad has repeatedly denied this saying its nuclear program is for energy purpose.
