Baghdad, Iraq (AHN) - The U.S. military has issued Marines in Iraq a low-power laser weapon that shoots green beams to warn or temporarily blind individuals.
The so-called Compact High Power Laser Dazzler does not violate the Geneva Convention banning weapons that blind people, according to Army Lt. Col. Barry Venable.
The weapon is useful in diverting drivers approaching U.S. military checkpoints in Iraq without causing injury. Marines have opened fire on civilians who failed to stop when they approached guarded areas, resulting in deaths and injuries.
An increase in defense spending this year allows the deployment of the Dazzlers to U.S. troops in Iraq.
