Los Angeles, CA (BANG) - Ricky Gervais is reportedly set to host the Academy Awards next year.

The British comic star - who has now appeared in several movies, including "Stardust," "Ghost Town" and can soon be seen in "This Side of the Truth" alongside Jennifer Garner - wowed fans with his appearance at the Emmys on September 21.

Following the ceremony, when Ricky scolded Steve Carell for stealing the award he won last year for his performance in British TV show "Extras," the star's agents were reportedly swarmed with enquiries about Ricky's availability and were urged to book a meeting with the organizers of the Oscars.

A source said: "The buzz around town is that Ricky should host the Oscars."

If Ricky, 47, does sign up to present the prestigious event, he would be following in the footsteps of Billy Crystal, Ellen DeGeneres and Steve Martin.

Ricky recently revealed has no aspirations to become a full-time Hollywood actor, admitting he hates watching himself on screen.

He said: "I just don't want to be a film star. I'm just not excited by seeing my face on screen. For me, it is all about the creative process. The creative idea is the exciting bit and then it is all about how much you ruin it."

"In 20 years time when I am too fat to walk, I'll look up at my shelf and I'll have 'The Office' box set and the 'Extras' box set, a couple of films, maybe three, and I will be happy with that."
