October 4, 2008 2:53 p.m. EST AHN Sports Staff Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Reigning NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin tallied a goal and added two assists to lead the Washington Capitals past the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 in preseason action Friday night. Ovechkin, who registered 65 goals and 112 points for the Caps last season, opened up the scoring for Washington with a short-handed tally, 15 minutes into the first period. In the second, he helped set up Chris Clark , who shot past Flyers goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin at the 3:50 mark. Nicklas Backstrom extended the Caps lead to 3-0, off an assist from Ovechkin. Philadelphia got up the scoreboard courtesy of a power-play goal from Daniel Briere in the third period. Tomas Fleischmann and Eric Fehr each added a goal to complete the scoring for the Capitals. Washington will try to finish its preseason on a high note when it plays the Bruins in the finale Sunday.
