October 15, 2008 6:08 p.m. EST AHN Sports Staff San Diego, CA (AHN) - Former Major League baseball player Jose Canseco was charged in federal court Tuesday with a misdemeanor offense for trying to bring a fertility drug across the border from Mexico. Canseco could face a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine after being charged with one count of introducing a mislabeled drug. He did not enter a plea in his short court appearance Tuesday and was later released on his own recognizance. Last Thursday, Canseco was detained at the international border at San Ysidro by agents after a fertility drug, human chorionic gonadotropin, was found in his possession without a prescription. Officials released Canseco after the player allowed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to search his Los Angeles-area home. He is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 4 for a preliminary hearing.
