Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is expected to take over the chairmanship of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) when the GOP holds elections for its top posts next Tuesday.

The first-term senator is set to take the leadership post after Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) dropped his bid for the chairmanship to focus on his re-election bid, Roll Call said on Thursday.

Next Tuesday, Minnesota is scheduled to manually recount all 2.9 million votes cast in the race between Coleman and Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party candidate Al Franken. The same day, Republicans hold elections for top posts including the NRSC chair.

The NRSC is responsible for getting Republicans elected to the U.S. Senate. Its current head, Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) is seeking to replace Sen .Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) as chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, which is composed of GOP Senate leaders and the chairmen of the Senate's standing committees.
