New York, NY (CNS) - A national tour of the musical "Dreamgirls" will officially launch at Harlem's historic Apollo Theater in November 2009.
"Dreamgirls" has long been known for producing stars, as the Broadway version turned Jennifer Holliday into an overnight star when it debuted in 1981 at the Imperial Theatre. The 2006 film adaptation of "Dreamgirls" earned Jennifer Hudson the Best Featured Actress Oscar, for her performance as Effie White.
Celebrity News Service thinks launching the tour at the Apollo is only fitting, since the opening scene of "Dreamgirls" take place in the legendary Apollo Theater.
If you've always dreamed big and thought you could play one of the leads in the show, it's not too late. Producers of the national tour will hold auditions for "Dreamgirls'" central trio of The Dreams, including the roles of Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White, on November 22 at the Apollo Theatre.
According to Playbill, the production will also boast co-choreography from Emmy-nominated hip-hop artist Shane Sparks, who was a guest judge and choreographer on "So You Think You Can Dance."
Tickets for "Dreamgirls" at the Apollo Theater go on sale Jan. 26, 2009, at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster.com and the Apollo Theater box office.
