Malvern, AR (AHN) - A small earthquake struck south-central Arkansas Tuesday morning.

The quake struck at 11:34 a.m. and registered as a magnitude 2.2 rated by the NEIC, according to the National Earthquake Information Center.

Its epicenter was about 5 miles north of Malvern and about 34 miles southwest of Little Rock.

Although small earthquakes are common across the United States, there have been several in the state this month.

On Saturday evening a 2.3 temblor hit central Arkansas about six miles northeast of Hot Springs Village just before 6:30 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. But emergency dispatchers in Garland County reportedly did not receive any calls about the quake from area residents. Another 2.3 quake struck the area on Sunday, according to reports.

There was also a 2.6 earthquake on Nov. 21 about 13 miles northeast of Hot Springs Village, a Nov. 10 temblor registering 2.0 three miles northeast of Rockport, and an earlier Nov. 2 earthquake in that area registering 2.7.

Many earthquakes that occur are not on any known fault line. The last time that a major quake occurred on the state's famous New Madrid fault line in the eastern part of the state was in 1812.
