Carthage, MO (AHN) - Bedding and furniture manufacturer Leggett & Platt Inc. announced lay offs of about 40 employees at its corporate headquarters because of slumping consumer demand for its products.

Employees learned of the job cuts through a letter from the company president.

These cuts are in addition to earlier company wide cuts of about 150 jobs, mostly through attrition, earlier this year.

In addition, the company has sold six other businesses this year, including an aluminum group and plants that manufacture commercial vehicle, wood and plastic products. Sales of those companies are expected to bring in about $400 million.

These latest job cuts by Leggett & Platt bring its work force down to 2,400 employees.
