Houston, TX (AHN) - Former First Lady Barbara Bush is set to leave the Methodist Hospital in Houston on Tuesday, a week after she underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer, according to FOX.

Bush, who championed universal literacy as first lady and as second lady when her husband was vice president, was taken to the hospital last week after suffering abdominal pains. She had laparoscopic surgery wherein doctors "patched and closed a one-centimeter hole" in her stomach caused by the ulcer.

The hospitalization of the 83-year old mother of President George W. Bush and wife of former President George H.W. Bush came about as the President marked his last Thanksgiving at the White House.

In one of his remarks on the holiday, the President said, "Over the past eight years I have been given many reasons to be thankful... I'm thankful to our men and women in uniform and I'm incredibly proud to have been their commander-in-chief...I'm thankful for the fact that my mother is doing well."
