Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Japan's leading carmaker Toyota Motor Corp. announced on Tuesday it will shut down all its 12 wholly-owned plants in Japan for another 11 days in lieu of the declining demand for automobiles across the globe.
Company spokesman Paul Nolasco said the extra suspension of production will run between February and March and said the move was necessary to survive the worsening demand for demand without cutting jobs.
Nolasco was quoted by CNN as saying, "In good times and bad, we try to keep output in line with demand, keeping production in line with demand. This will help even out production flow."
Earlier, Toyota announced it will shut down domestic production by three days in January, but later extended the move by another 11 days.
The production plants to be shut down are auto assembly factories and others which makes car parts.
The decision is expected to have a rippling effect among Toyo suppliers of parts and raw materials.
