AHN Sports Staff Kansas City, MO (AHN) - Herm Edwards is likely to stay on to finish the final year of his contract as Kansas City coach, sources close to the Chiefs told a major media outlet Wednesday. The 54-year-old Edwards is more likely to be retained under the new leadership of general manager Scott Pioli, instead of being ditched out of Arrowhead Stadium for next season, according to sources by ESPN.com. The Web site said Pioli was believed to be eying two candidates in a bid to overhaul the Chiefs' dismal 2-14 mark in 2008-New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. But McDaniels has since joined Denver and Ferentz has made it clear he isn't leaving Iowa, making Edwards the conventional choice to remain in the Chiefs sidelines at least for another year. Additionally, team owner Clark Hunt is reportedly against the hiring of a college coach, sources told ESPN. Hunt also wanted a status quo for the next season, the Web site added, though he insisted Pioli will be the right man to decide for that. Edwards, whose future is likely to be determined later this week, had seen his number of victories decline for the third straight year. After leading Kansas City to nine victories and a wild-card stint during his debut season, Edwards' wards only won four games in 2007 before slumping to 14 defeats this past campaign. His career record with the Chiefs stands at 15-33.
