AHN Staff Cairo, Egypt (AHN) - Egypt has confirmed that a 21-month-old girl was the latest victim of bird flu infection in the country but she has been treated of the fatal disease. Egypt's health ministry on Monday said the girl from the Kerdasa district in the 6th of October governorate west of the capital Cairo exhibited symptoms of H5N1 infection on Jan. 9. She was taken to Imbaba Fever Hospital the following day suffering from fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid respiration. The patient was given oseltamivir or Tamiflu and is currently in good health. The girl had close contact with sick and dead poultry before she got sick, the office of the World Health Organization's Mediterranean office said. The last case of bird flu infection in Egypt was five weeks ago and the patient, a 16-year-old girl from Asyut governorate, died on Dec. 15. She was the 23rd Egyptian who died from the disease.
