Miami, FL (AHN) - The Food and Drug Administration is urging Americans not to eat any products containing peanut butter or peanut paste until investigators can ensure the food doesn't contain peanut butter from Peanut Corp. of America, some of which contained salmonella.
The FDA says eating peanut butter from a jar, like Jif or Peter Pan, is safe.
Products the FDA says it wants people to stay away from include cookies, ice cream, cereal, crackers and candy.
The FDA said Saturday that peanut butter and peanut paste manufactured in Peanut Corp.'s Blakely, Ga. plant were found to contain the bacteria.
Investigators are trying to find out if the tainted peanut butter is connected with a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 474 people in 43 states.
Peanut Corp. announced an expanded recall of its peanut butter and peanut paste on Friday night.
The Blakely processing plant, which employs about 50 people, suspended operations last week while investigators try to get the bottom of the situation, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
