"It's unbelievable, it's been a long, long road," jockey Calvin Borel, a two-time Kentucky Derby winner, told NBC immediately after the race.
"50 to 1!" Borel, who also won in 2007 on Street Sense, continued to scream about the odds his horse overcame as he made a victory lap.
The horse with El Paso, Texas ties and hailing from New Mexico was the biggest long-shot entering the day, but had some upset genes going for him.
His father, Birdstone, halted Smart Jones' 2004 Triple Crown bid despite lofty 36-1 odds.
He also had a terrific kick at the end of the race that enabled the 'Bird' to fly past his competition in the Run for the Roses.
Pioneerof the Nile placed and Musket Man showed Saturday.
Mine That Bird paid $103.20 per $2 bet and is considered the second-biggest upset in the event since 1913's winner Donerail.
