First Lady Kicks Off "United We Serve" Summer On Monday

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - First Lady Michelle Obama will help kick off the "United We Serve" project on Monday with a visit to an elementary school in San Francisco. Michelle Obama will meet with the First Lady of California Maria Shriver and Corporation for National and Community Service acting CEO Nicky Goren at Bret Harte Public Elementary School.

"United We Serve is an extended call to service by President Obama challenging all Americans to help lay a new foundation for growth in this country by engaging in sustained, meaningful community service," the White House said.

United We Serve will run from June 22nd through Sept. 11th. Across the country, the Obama administration is touting kick off events at the cabinet level.

At the Defense Department, Secretary Robert Gates will visit the Walter Reed Army Medical Center to spend time with wounded soldiers. Volunteers from Youth Conservation Corps, Volunteers-in-the-Parks, Student Conservation Association will meet with Interior Secretary Salazar at the Shenandoah National Park.

In Los Angeles, Labor Secretary Solis will help the Action YouthBuild program to construct energy-efficient housing for low income families. In New Orleans, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Donovan will rebuild a home destroyed by Hurricane Katrina with volunteers from the St. Bernard Project.
