Miami, FL (CNS) - Miami-based Latin pop star Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio were named minority owners of the Miami Dolphins on Thursday. Owner Stephen Ross formally announced the deal at a ceremony held at Land Shark Stadium.

"I have always said that ownership should reflect the wonderful diversity of South Florida," Ross said in a press release, "and having Emilio and Gloria join the team as minority partners is just the first step towards including many of the diverse elements of this community as part of our ownership group."

"In addition, the Estefans are known internationally as true visionaries in entrepreneurship, entertainment and business. We are looking forward to their contributions to help enhance the game-day experience for our fans, which has been one of my priorities from the very start of my ownership. I am honored and excited that they are connected with the Miami Dolphins in this way." concluded Ross.

"This is thrilling, to be part of the hometown team," Gloria Estefan said. "But don't worry, we won't be calling any plays."

Ross likes to pair up show business personalities with the NFL franchise. In May, Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville label Land Shark Lager was awarded the naming rights for the 2009 season. It has also been speculated that Buffett will soon buy a portion of the team.
