Monaco (AHN) - Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara finished Saturday's 9.6 mile time trial of the Tour de France in 19 minutes, 32 seconds to win the first stage and capture the yellow jersey.

Alberto Contador finished 18 seconds back, and was one of four Astanta team riders to finish in the top 10.

Andreas Kloden of Germany was fourth, American Levi Leipheimer was sixth and Lance Armstrong, after flirting with the lead early on, finished in 10th place 40 seconds behind Cancellara.

"Stage One done," the 37-year-old Armstrong Tweeted after Saturday's competition. "Started conservative and we tried to come home strong."
