Ottawa, Ontario (AHN) - Although Canada only shed only a net 7,400 jobs in June, the country's unemployment rate slowly climbed up by 0.2 percent to 8.6 percent in June.

Canada actually lost 47,500 jobs in the sixth month of 2009, but that was partially offset by the creation of 40,100 part-time posts, bringing total job losses for the second quarter to 13,000. It was comparably better than the first quarter's 273,000 lost jobs.

According to Statistics Canada, hardest hit by the continuous - although slower pace of job losses - were the country's youth whose sector reported job losses of 33,000 in June.

StatsCan's report beat economists' expectations that jobs shed would reach 35,000 and the unemployment rate would hit 8.7 percent.

By province, employment went up in Quebec and British Columbia and was unchanged in Alberta. Unemployment rate in Ontario still declined, but at a slower pace.

Bank of Montreal economist Douglas Porter, commenting on the June labor report, said, "Today's job report is not as friendly as the headline would suggest, but it's also not shockingly weak, such as last week's dire U.S. payroll news. But even if the Canadian job losses are gradually easing, it's obvious that recession has yet to let go its steely grip on the economy, with the squeeze particularly intense in manufacturing."
