Tempe, AZ (AHN) - US Airways announced Tuesday that it will cut 600 workers in September after the summer travel season ends.

The cuts represent about 1.9 percent of the Tempe, Arizona-based airlines staff and involve airport service and baggage handling jobs.

Last year, the airline reduced flights but it has still struggled to fill seats as the recession deepens resulting in fewer people traveling.

Company officials reportedly will also close US Airways Club at the Las Vegas, Nevada, airport as well as the city ticket office in Phoenix, Arizona and also cut staff at the Phoenix US Airways Club.

US Airways will also outsource some job functions at nine stations that serve US Airways Express regional airlines.
