Chicago, IL (AHN) - Long used as a treatment for burns and cuts, dentists are now eyeing aloe vera as an effective tooth and gum cleaner, and a new report suggests it is as effective in fighting cavities as conventional toothpaste.
The findings appeared in the Academy of General Dentistry's journal, General Dentistry.
The researchers said that aloe vera tooth gel serves the same function as toothpaste - eliminating disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. They compared the germ-fighting ability of aloe vera gel with two popular toothpaste brands and found it just as effective, and in some cases more effective, at fighting germs.
Another benefit of the gel is that it is less abrasive on teeth than conventional toothpaste and may be a good alternative for those with sensitive teeth and gums.
The researchers warned, however, that not all aloe vera gel products contain the anti-inflammatory compounds needed to combat cavity-causing germs. They recommend consulting the International Aloe Science Council to see what products pass the test.
