Mexico City, Mexico (AHN) - A Bolivian religious fanatic hijacked a Mexican plane Wednesday in an attempt to warn Mexico's president that an earthquake will hit the country, according to a Mexican official.

The arrested hijacker identified as Jose Mari Flores, 44, believed the date 9-9-09 was a bad omen because it was the satanic number 666 turned upside down, Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna said.

Luna contradicted reports that there were several hijackers. He said it was only Flores who forced the Aeromexico jet with 104 passengers to land at the Mexico City airport shortly after taking off from the resort city of Cancun.

The safety official also said the hijacker had no bomb through earlier reports said hijackers threatened to blow up the plane if their demands are not met.

Police stormed the plane after the passengers were safely evacuated. The police later came out with six suspects in handcuffs, including Flores.
