New York. NY (AHN) - New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and Toronto Blue Jays reliever Jesse Carlson were both suspended three games and fined $3000 each for sparking Tuesday night's bench-clearing brawl.

They were originally banned four games, but the punishment was reduced as they agreed not to fight the decision.

Yankees reserve Shelly Duncan was docked the same number of games and fees, but opted to appeal his punishment.

Carlson threw a pitch behind Posada, angering the Yankee catcher despite New York reliever Mark Melancon tagging Aaron Hill with a pitch earlier.

Posada, usually classy if not particularly known for baseball smarts, elbowed Carlson after scoring on a double in the eighth.

The situation quickly escalated with Posada swinging at Carlson and pulled at his shirt and the brawl was on.

Duncan came into the fray reportedly throwing wild punches, leading to his suspension and fine.

Posada reportedly had a stiff neck, Carlson had a welt on his forehead, umpire Derryl Cousins was hit with a bottle and Yankees manager Joe Girardi suffered a cut over his left eye according to the New York Post.
