Detroit, MI (AHN) - University of Michigan Athletic Director Bill Martin announced his retirement Wednesday, saying that he will be giving up the role on Sept. 4, 2010.

He told his staff in a brief, approximate 10 minute-long meeting that he's enjoyed working for Michigan, but it's time for him to move on and do something else.

He drew additional reference to the difficult times they've been through - including Rich Rodriguez's legal issues and alleged violations of NCAA policy before the 2009 season.

Martin has not addressed his decision any further, or explained why he gave notice.

The most likely candidates to replace him are football coach Lloyd Carr or assistant athletic director Dr. Michael Stevenson.

One of his most notable accomplishments is leading six athletic programs to a budget surplus in the last five years.

Michigan has reportedly finished nine-straight years in the green.

It's expected to continue with Martin's department generating $8.8 million in surplus next season.
