Waterloo, Ontario (AHN) - Research in Motion's latest smartphone model made a big splash Wednesday with the official launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9700. The high-profile introduction of the mobile device is evidenced by the carrying of the handheld unit by Canada's three wireless carriers simultaneously for the first time.

Rogers Communications, Bell Mobility and Telus Corporation will sell the BlackBerry Bold 9700 in their outlets next month. It will replace the current Bold model as RIM's flagship unit. The Bold 9700 has a full QWERTY keyboard, a 3.2 megapixel camera which could shoot video, GPS technology and WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. Instead of a trackball, it will have a touch sensitive trackpad.

RIM president and co-chief executive officer Mike Lazaridis said in a statement, "The Blackberry Bold 9700 builds on the success of the original BlackBerry Bold with new, state-of-the-art features and a smaller, lighter and highly optimized design hat looks, feels and performs great."
