Portsmouth, England (AHN) - Portsmouth FC's new owner Ali Al-Faraj maintained his long-term commitment to the club, contrary to suggestions contained in a reported interview.

In a Sunday Mirror report, Al-Faraj indicated that he did not purchase the club on a "whim".

He also insisted that he did not intend to make a quick buck from the deal.

The issue stemmed from a reported interview given last week by Al-Faraj and his brother to Asharq Al-Awsat-a London-based Saudi newspaper.

According to the report interview, the Saudi business tycoon purportedly indicated his short-term plans in acquiring the club.

Pompey removed a statement from it website threatening legal action against any media outlet that published details of the interview.

Portsmouth initially denied the interview took place.

The club reported Saturday that Al-Faraj did talk with the Saudi newspaper, but reportedly maintained that conversation was not intended for publication.

Al-Faraj secured a 90 percent majority holding in the Fratton Park-based club from UAE businessman Sulaiman Al-Fahim earlier this month.

Al-Fahim retained the remaining 10 percent.
