A talented striker he had earned his right to ply his trade in the Premier League, despite a troubled past in which he had been jailed once before.
Then in December of 2008, having been spurned by a 19-year-old student in a London club, King let his fists, not his feet do the talking.
After allegedly groping the woman, King proceeded to punch her breaking her nose in the process according to reports.
Ten months later, King was convicted of sexual assualt and actual bodily harm by a majority of 10-2 and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
A furious Wigan Athletic chairman, Dave Whelan, is now in the process of severing the players contract with the club, although under Premier League rules the club must pay King for 14 days first.
