Doha, Qatar (AHN) - Serena Williams has withdrawn from the upcoming Fed Cup. She told the United States Tennis Association she won't play in next weekend's final.

The United States is in the finals against Italy.

American Vania King will replace the soon-to-be world's No. 1 ranked women's player. Williams hasn't played for the U.S. Fed Cup team since 2007.

King is making her sixth Fed Cup appearance. She'll join captain Mary Joe Fernandez, Melanie Oudin, Liezel Huber and Alexa Glatch.

The finals swing into action in Reggio Calabria, Italy.

It's unknown why Williams is pulling out of the competition. She's in this weekend's final at the Sony Ericsson Championships.

Serena faces her sister Venus Williams for the title Sunday.
