Chicago, IL (AHN) - Chicago Cubs left-handed ace Ted Lilly had surgery on his left shoulder to clean up a fraying he underwent throughout the season.

Originally, the doctors had thought he could mend on his own, and did not need the surgery, but due to his continued pain, they reevaluated their belief.

After continued discomfort, Lilly and the doctors realize they may have erred, and should have ended the season early with surgery rather than soldier through.

By all reports, the surgery went very well according to a statement from Cubs general manager Jim Hendry.

Renown orthopedic surgeon doctor Lewis Youcum performed the operation.

The expected recovery time is about four months before he'll be able to throw again, which will likely put him past the start of the 2010 season.
