Bucharest, Romania (CNS) - Madonna's shoes will go a long way... to Romania. The pop superstar's custom made Christian Dior skyscraper gold heels fetched $16,600 in a charity auction supporting the education of Roma children.

One of the heels was reportedly marked with kisses and a heart by her while the other was signed "Love Madonna."

Also sold at the auction for the Ovidiu Rom charity in Bucharest, Romania, was Vanessa Redgrave's gold chain, which fetched $8,300.

Money collected from the auction will be used to buy clothes and school books for Roma children.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed applauded Madonna for her effort, but said she should do more for the Roma people. He pointed out that the 51-year-old star, who earned around $110 million in a 12-month period, would be effective in raising the world's awareness to the 15 million Roma people of Europe.

In August, Madonna was booed at her Bucharest concert by fans when she sympathized with Roma people.
