Superstar swimmer Michael Phelps failed to make it to the 100 meters freestyle finals of the World Cup.

He finished 47.77 in the heats.

Phelps time was the 16th fastest time and 1.84 seconds behind Stefan Nystrand's 45.93 seconds. Nystrand finished with the best time.

Phelps wore an old-style swimsuit while other swimmers had faster high-tech suits.

He said he wanted to use the contest as a test in the old-style swimsuit because he knew he wasn't in the best shape.

The Stockholm meet was Phelps first time in a short-course event since 2006, and his first time competing since the Rome World Championships in July.

He's competing in five races in Sweden and will also swim in Berlin this weekend.
