Jacksonville, FL (AHN) - Fred Funk underwent successful knee surgery Monday and hopes to return to action on the PGA Tour in January.

Funk had a total knee replacement in Jacksonville, Florida.

The 53-year old has fought knee issues all season.

He's going to be in the hospital a few days before returning home to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Funk can start hitting golf balls in about six weeks.

In 2008 he had surgery after tearing cartilage in his knee and he later developed a staph infection.

The 2005 Players Championship champion remains exempt on the PGA Tour through 2010.
