New York, NY (AHN) - The United Nations appealed for more aid donations for typhoon victims in the Philippines on Wednesday. The new appeal was made because its call for $74 million in assistance last month remains unfulfilled.

The world body said $144 million is needed to help 1.7 million Filipinos displaced by tropical storm Ketsana in September and typhoon Parma in October. So far, only $26 million have been raised but the amount is short of what humanitarian agencies need to effectively help homeless Filipinos.

The two storms killed more than 1,000 people, affected 9.8 million people, destroyed more than 40,000 homes and kept 85,000 languishing in ill-equipped evacuation centers.

The disaster agency estimated the cost of devastation to be $831 million.
