Toronto, Ontario (AHN) - The Toronto Transit Commission approved on Tuesday a fare hike which will take effect Jan. 3, 2010. The increase adopts the recommendation made by the transit's staff on Nov. 4.

Under the approved fare, the increase would range from 25 cents for adult cash fare to $3.95 for a Greater Toronto Area pass. There will be a fare hike for all 11 types of fares in TTC buses and trains.

Even before the TTC could come up with the official announcement of the fare adjustment, residents have anticipated it would be approved and tried to beat the expected fare increase by stocking on tokens. However, the TTC limited token purchases to 10, then eventually whittled to five per buy.

The fare increase is expected to bring in an additional $62 million to TTC's coffers next year, but it is likely not sufficient to cover the firm's planned $1.3 billion operating budget for 2010.

To help students cope with the rising transit fare, TTC chair Adam Giambrone said the company plans to extend the student fare discount to college students. In so doing, TTC aims to make these youth lifetime TTC riders.
