New Delhi (AHN) - The "Daughters Against Dowry" campaign was formally launched in India on Wednesday, the day that is celebrated worldwide as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. A booklet was also released on the prohibition of child marriage.

It provides information on the provision of the act and enlists the responsibility of various stakeholders.

Women and Child Development minister, Krishna Tirath expressed concern over the continuing cases of harassment of women over dowry. She said law by itself cannot help and that the civil society should also run a mass campaign to fight against this evil.

The "Daughters Against Dowry" campaign was launched to sensitize schools girls and to inspire them to fight against dowry and to create strong opinion against it, outside as well as within their families.

Home Minister, P. Chidambaram was also present at the launch and he said that violence against women and girl child in a civilized society is totally unjustified and unacceptable. He expressed hope that the younger generation, especially the girls would stand up against dowry and child marriage.

Lora Prabhu, from The Center for Equity and Inclusion (CEQUIN) feels it is a good idea to engage the younger generation in the process. "The change has to come from within the society. Till people's mindsets change we cannot achieve a long lasting result. It is definitely one of the solution to sensitize young girls and create an awareness about the issue."
