Toronto, Canada (AHN) - Blue Jays shortstop John McDonald has signed a two-year, $3 million deal to be a bac-up infielder in Toronto.

General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is still in the hunt for a shortstop to take on the starting role, and will see who is available in free agency soon.

Several possibilities are out there, including Marco Scutaro, who did exceptionally well for them in 2009, batting .282 over 144 games.

He is currently a free agent, as he wished to test the market and is looking for more than Toronto is willing to offer at this point.

Scutaro has drawn attention from the Red Sox, which will make a competitive offer required if Toronto wishes to retain his services.

McDonald will serve as a backup plan in Toronto, should nothing work out the way Anthopoulos was hoping.

McDonald did respectably well, batting .258 in 73 games last season.
