Buffalo, NY (AHN) - The Buffalo Sabres shelled the Carolina Hurricanes with five goals in the third period, and Ryan Miller stopped 30 shots to lift the Sabres over the Hurricanes 5-1 Saturday at HSBC Arena.

Carolina, the only NHL team without a win on the road (0-10-3), had a 1-0 lead from Matt Cullen's unassisted backhander 8:19 into the first period. Both teams went scoreless in the second.

Then the third period began, and it was not pretty for the 'Canes (5-16-5).

Sabres' Mike Grier had a wrist shot for the first goal. Sergei Samsonov helped Buffalo after being tagged for tripping Derek Roy.

Clarke MacArthur knocked in the second score on the power play.

Roy followed on a pass from Jason Pominville and Jochen Hecht for a 3-1 edge.

Thomas Vanek chipped in with a goal and an assist to defeat Michael Leighton (19 saves) to seal the win. It was Vanek's eighth goal of the season.

Carolina played a similar game against the Atlanta Thrashers Friday when they blew a three-goal lead to lose 6-4.

The Sabres improved their record to 14-7-2.
