Four of the deceased were children.
Local Fox News affiliate, WSFA, reports that the van, carrying 15 people, blew a tire, hit the truck and flipped over several times before landing on the opposite side of the Interstate 10 near Baton Rouge.
Louisiana State Trooper Russell Graham said in a statement that most of the passengers in the van were not wearing safety belts and were ejected from the vehicle. The driver and the front seat passenger were the only ones wearing seat belts. The driver, 38-year-old Mona Hines, was killed. The front seat passenger, 28-year-old Stacey Hines, is listed in stable condition, according to Graham.
The nine other passengers were taken to the Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and Baton Rouge general Hospital and are in critical condition, Graham said.
